Bite-sized history served from a
nineteenth century family recipe book

An old, worn-out book with a dark, speckled cover and a brown leather spine.

Welcome to A pinch of time

Do you like digesting history in bite-sized pieces? Then you have come to the right place.

A pinch of time is a food history project researching and transcribing a handwritten book of recipes collected in the nineteenth century by Emily Blaauw. Each recipe uncovers stories about her world and the people she knew through the food she ate. Most of the recipes are attributed to family and friends, and can be traced back more than 200 years to the Georgian and Regency eras.

This is working archive; as recipes are transcribed and researched they are added to the menu above as blog posts. The most recent posts appear below and new content is posted regularly. To be notified of new posts, subscribe at the bottom of the page.
